Should I get a male or female corgi?
Hold the preference loosely: males tilt slightly sillier and more indiscriminately affectionate, females slightly more self-possessed, and sterilisation shrinks even those gaps. Individual temperament, visible in ten minutes on the floor, outpredicts sex every time. Decide your household’s temperament brief, meet the matching puppies, and let sex be the tiebreaker at most.
The honest headline: the difference is smaller than the folklore
"Male or female?" is the second question every corgi buyer asks (housing is compulsorily first, with us), and the pet industry has spent decades supplying confident answers: males are loving buffoons, females are clever ice queens, males bond to the family, females bond to one person, and so on through the folklore songbook.
Here is what a hundred-plus corgi placements actually support: the average differences between the sexes are real but small, the differences between individual puppies are large, and sterilisation, which most Singapore pet corgis undergo around month seven, shrinks the sex gap further still. Choosing a companion corgi primarily by sex is like choosing a car primarily by paint: not meaningless, but nowhere near the top of the decision stack.
That said, "small" is not "zero", and buyers deserve the honest averages before we talk them out of over-weighting them. So: the physical facts first, the temperament tilts second, the plumbing practicalities third, and then the method that actually produces happy matches, which is the one we run on the shop floor every week.

Temperament tilts: what the averages whisper
Across many litters and follow-up years, the tilts we would actually defend, stated at whisper volume. Males trend a notch more openly affectionate and socially indiscriminate, the whole-family, whole-visitor, whole-world greeter, a shade sillier for longer (male corgi adolescence is a gap year that can run to age two), and marginally more food-motivated, which trainers quietly enjoy.
Females trend a notch more self-possessed: affection on their schedule, a faster-maturing focus that can make early training feel crisper, and a slightly more managerial read on household politics, if any corgi is auditing your dinner guests from the sofa arm, the odds lean female. Both sexes herd, bark, shed and love with complete equality, and the breed's core, the velcro devotion, the comedy, the opinions, is sex-independent.
Now the volume-restoring caveat: every tilt above is an average with enormous overlap, and any given litter cheerfully refutes it. We have placed clingy velcro females who out-clung any male on record and serene males who out-dignified any matriarch, and the sex-based prediction failed both times while the puppy's own observable temperament, visible at nine weeks to anyone who watches for ten minutes, predicted perfectly.

The practical plumbing: what actually changes your year
Where sex genuinely touches daily life is the sterilisation timeline, so here is that, honestly. An intact male from adolescence may start marking (lifting a leg indoors is trainable-away but real), roam-search at doors and gates, and escalate posturing with other intact males at the run; neutering around month seven, standard guidance here, resolves or prevents most of it, and the licence fee drops to the sterilised tier as a bonus.
An intact female cycles roughly twice yearly: two to three weeks of heat with spotting (washable-pants era), magnetised male attention on walks, and, notably for this breed, a coat blow commonly following each cycle; spaying ends the cycles, the mess and the associated health risks your vet will brief you on, with the same licence discount. Post-sterilisation, both sexes need the ten-percent portion cut from our weight guide, and both settle into the temperament the individual, not the plumbing, always intended.
Health-wise, the sexes trade small risk profiles that sterilisation reshuffles, timing and trade-offs being properly your vet's conversation, not a shop page's, and neither sex holds a meaningful lifespan or corgi-specific advantage: backs, hips, weight and heat, the breed's real ledger from our health guide, are equal-opportunity concerns.

Choosing a puppy well is a method, and the personality-first version produces the happy year-one stories, run at the shop weekly: decide your household's temperament brief before meeting anyone, active family wanting a robust playmate, first-timer wanting a biddable student, work-from-homer wanting a shadow, then tell us the brief, hear which current puppies match it regardless of sex, and come meet those.
On the floor, watch for ten unhurried minutes: who approaches first and how, who recovers fastest from a dropped keyring, who settles into a lap versus patrols the perimeter. The puppy that matches your brief is the answer, and if two match it equally and one is the sex you slightly fancied, congratulations, enjoy the tiebreaker with our blessing, that is exactly the weight sex deserves in this decision: the final coin-flip, never the coin.
